The 2024 UNFPA Nigeria EndFGM Project was designed to tackle the persistent issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in high-prevalence states, including Ebonyi, Ekiti, Imo, Osun, and Oyo. The project strategically targeted young people, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to become advocates for change within their schools and communities.

The initiative had three primary objectives: to raise awareness on the harmful effects of FGM, to empower youth to speak out and drive advocacy efforts, and to use multimedia platforms to broaden outreach and promote sustained dialogue on ending FGM in Nigeria.

Two main activities anchored the project. First was an Oratory Contest held in selected secondary schools across the five states. Students participated in a speech competition progressing through quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. Winners received awards, and all participants were encouraged to become vocal advocates against FGM.

The second activity was the EndFGM Podcast Series, developed to expand the conversation beyond the physical events. The podcast featured experts, survivors, youth advocates, and health practitioners discussing various aspects of FGM. Full episodes were shared on YouTube, while short clips were promoted on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) to engage broader audiences online.

Overall, the project aimed to increase awareness, build a generation of informed youth advocates, and drive both community-level and online engagement. By combining grassroots education with digital storytelling, the project contributed significantly to national efforts to end FGM in Nigeria.
