In reaching young people with messages on Gender equality, Gender-based Violence, Girl Education, Female genital mutilation and VVF, having a sure approach to reaching the over 12 million social media users in Nigeria is key. According to NCC, over 98 million of Nigerians use the internet as at April 2019. While about 12% of this number have a social media account. WhatsApp is the most active social media platform in the country with 85% of users. The second is Facebook at 78%, Instagram is third at 57%, followed by FB Messenger at 54% and Youtube at 53%. 75% of Nigerians uses social media With over 17million facebook subscribers as at December 2017, behind Egypt, Algeria and Angola, 55.5% of our population with over 55,000% growth the last 1 years.
To be able to reap the benefits of this growing communities, EVA and YouthHub Africa with the support of UNFPA Nigeria are committed to working with youth who are existing social media influencers to reaching other young people within their online communities. This project will build a community of young advocates who will use social media as an effective tool and strategy to raise awareness, share impact stories, and connect with relevant stakeholders to drive social change on that is of utmost importance to UNFPA Nigeria.
Goal:
Build a network of youth advocates using social media to reach and engage people especially their peers on issues related to adolescent and young people’s SRHR.
Objectives:
1. Build capacity of 40 existing youth leaders and social media influencers across 20 states in the use of social media for advocacy.
2. Develop a social media strategy and work plan.
3. Develop and implement issue-based and commemoration day campaigns.
The focal states are Oyo, Gombe, Akwa Ibom, Sokoto and Bauchi. The other states are: in the north: Kano, Kaduna, FCT, Borno, Adamawa, Kebbi, Yobe and in the south: Osun, Ekiti, Imo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Cross River, Ogun and Benue.
