Africa Is Not A Country

Africa is not a Country

The “Africa Is Not A Country” project, implemented by YouthHubAfrica in partnership with World’s Best News (WBN), Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX), and University of Southern Denmark (SDU), is an innovative student exchange and journalism education initiative that challenges stereotypes about Africa and strengthens global collaboration in media and development reporting.

Through a mix of study tours, case-based learning, and storytelling, the project aims to equip 250 journalism students with the skills and understanding needed to report on global development issues with nuance, accuracy, and depth. In 2024, 3 Nigerian students and the Executive Director of YouthHubAfrica visited Denmark, sharing African perspectives and participating in academic discussions and public events. And to complete the exchange program, 16 Danish students and 2 WBN staff visited Ghana (Accra and Tamale), where they engaged in field reporting, cultural exchanges, and debates on global issues.

The project also included radio engagements, a visit to the Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, and multiple dissemination activities through WBN’s media platforms and four public events. Students explored themes across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a special focus on Goals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 13, and 16, and contributed stories that inspired dialogue and understanding between the Global North and South.

By bridging cultures and fostering media partnerships, Africa Is Not A Country reinforces SDGs 16.10, 12.8, and 17, demonstrating how journalism can be a tool for truth, equality, and sustainable development. The initiative not only strengthens media literacy and intercultural awareness but also empowers the next generation of journalists to tell Africa’s stories more authentically and inclusively.
