Girls Documenting Covid

YouthhubAfrica is organising the Girls Documenting Covid-19 project to train young girls to carry out a documentary exercise of their experiences and that of their neighbours during this pandemic and the eventual lockdown of schools. The 8 young girls were selected from all parts of the country.

The project begins with training on photography and videography skills to train the girls on how to tell their stories during this lockdown. The girls will be expected to carry out activities in the project in their different communities using camera phones that have been handed over to them by taking snapshots of their daily activities and recording videos of specific weekly assignments that would be given to them.

The 8 young girls were selected from a pool of about 100 applicants that showed interest in the project through an open online call for nominations.
The objectives of the project include:

To build the capacity of the 8 girls on storytelling through photography and videography to be able to document their experiences in this Covid-19 pandemic so far.
To provide them with mentoring by professional female photographers in the country on how to gather their experiences in the last five months of school closure and the effects of the Covid-19 on their lives.
To engage with people in their immediate environment and households to find out how the virus and its attending measures have affected their lives and sources of living.
These girls will benefit from a virtual training on photography and videography skills, mentoring sessions with professional female photographers, and weekly assignments telling their stories.

The project is expected to equip girls with basic knowledge of photography, videography and storytelling skills, exposing challenges girls have faced during the Covid-19 lockdown to provide opportunities for further programming plans to be designed to cushion the effects, and bring to the fore awareness of living challenges young girls have encountered during the lockdown for further policy direction.
