Empowering Voices Against GBV project

The Empowering Voices Against GBV project, led by YouthHubAfrica, is a transformative initiative tackling the persistent issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria by engaging young men and boys as allies in prevention and advocacy. Despite the existence of laws like the VAPP Act, GBV remains widespread, fueled by harmful masculinities, patriarchal norms, and a culture of silence. This project responds directly to these root causes, working across ten states—Osun, Oyo, Imo, Ebonyi, FCT, Bauchi, Kano, Ekiti, Kaduna, and Cross River—through a blend of training, mentorship, community engagement, and high-level advocacy.

At the heart of the project is the Young Men’s Network (YMN) and the Ambassadors Program, which connect young men to positive role models and equip them with tools to promote healthy masculinity, emotional intelligence, and respect for women. Through curriculum-based training (virtual and in-person), community dialogues, mentorship cohorts, and an annual Men’s Summit, the project aims to build a critical mass of male advocates against GBV.

So far, the project has directly reached thousands of men and boys through cascading training models, mentorship programs, and grassroots engagements, with ripple effects expected nationwide. Ultimately, the project seeks to shift social norms, increase GBV reporting, and strengthen local systems of prevention and response, laying the foundation for safer and more equitable communities across Nigeria.
