Basic Education Media Fellowship

The Basic Education Media Fellowship aims to mobilize media interest in pushing for the 12 years of safe, free and quality basic education in Nigeria. It will also push for increased funding for education through the review of existing laws and legal frameworks.

The fellowship will:

  • Recognise and celebrate 15 existing media personnel across print, electronic and online whose support on basic education issues, education financing and education laws reporting in Nigeria is deemed notable.
  • Strengthen the capacity of 15 media personnel to understand the nuances of basic education, education funding and education laws in Nigeria and how to use their existing platforms to advocate for a 12 years free, safe, quality education in Nigeria.
  • Galvanize media reporting towards the amendment of the UBE Act and, the proposed amendment of the National Secondary Education Commission Act as well as any possible way of ensuring Nigeria law covers and provides for 12 years safe, free and quality basic education.

The project will also serve as a platform to celebrate, upskill and support media practitioners for qualitative and sustained reportage of basic education issues in Nigeria. Through its training, the fellowship envisions deepening participants’ knowledge, expanding media networks and coverage of all aspects of basic education, thereby increasing public awareness on basic education issues and ultimately securing state and non-state support towards addressing basic education challenges in Nigeria.

Timothy Crown

Fellow

My name is Timothy-Crown Adejare Aderibigbe a broadcast media professional with Africa’s leading Channels television. I started off my professional career as an elementary school teacher in 2001 and veered off officially in 2014 when I began my broadcast journalism career. That is after producing a number of successful professionals in their different careers since teaching in both primary and secondary institutions across the country.
The experience gotten there from has helped and still helps in appreciation of what it takes to raise a total child. This could be adduced to my keen interest in education generally and the basic education specifically. Early in my practice of journalism, I adopted a school where I mentored secondary school students some of whom are source of joy to me till date due to how much the impact is helping them navigate a purposeful living. At the moment, I work with Channels tv in Lagos as a reporter and a producer.

Umoh Clementina

Fellow

My name is Umoh Clementina Ediong popularly known as Seyene or Seyene De Lastborn. I currently reside in Lagos and i work with WAZOBIAFM LAGOS AND WAZOBIA TV/ WAZOBIA MAX TV. I have been practicing broadcast journalism for 3 years plus now and believe me it’s been amazing, throughout my years of practice I’ve never felt really bad about the Nigerian educational system like I did days ago. On the news stories on my show, there was a report about a 5 year old who drowned in a pool in Lagos while they were taken out for swimming lessons by their school. It was further said that, the school in question was registered by the Lagos State Government but not approved and it made me wonder if they do not have regulatory body that check this mushroom school. Alot has happened which should not be taken for granted. And with the Basic Education Media Fellowship 2022 I should be able to make an impact on the Educational sector in Nigeria. Apart from my regular job which is definitely fun I also do other things for fun. They include; sewing, acting, creating contents for social media, cooking, watching movies, reading and writing.

Aminu Alhassaini

Fellow

Aminu Alhussaini born in Amanawa of Dange shuni local government area of Sokoto state in the late 90s. A graduate of BSc Political science from Sokoto state University also obtained a Diploma in Mass Communication and computer studies. Received several awards from YES Network Nigeria 2018, Best 2020 Caliphate Radio Broadcaster, and Commendation Letter from Vision FM Sokoto as the best program producer.
Currently working with Vision FM Sokoto as multimedia Journalist and Sokoto correspondent of Blueprint Manhaja Newspaper.
Experience as a media journalist focusing on basic education in Nigeria: As a journalist with a special keen interest on Basic Education, I can say the UBE there is yet to achieve its stated objectives. This is because, there are many children in Sokoto who instead of being into four walls of school, are wandering aimlessly in the streets begging and scavenging. These innocent kids were sent away by their parents to cities to acquire Islamic Education, but end up mostly begging for alms in the streets. In many villages in Sokoto state, kids cannot go to schools during the rainy season, because the normally accompany their parents to farms. The worst trend today is that insecurity is removing thousands of children out of school in some eastern part of Sokoto state.
