The Basic Education Media Fellowship aims to mobilize media interest in pushing for the 12 years of safe, free and quality basic education in Nigeria. It will also push for increased funding for education through the review of existing laws and legal frameworks.
The fellowship will:
- Recognise and celebrate 15 existing media personnel across print, electronic and online whose support on basic education issues, education financing and education laws reporting in Nigeria is deemed notable.
- Strengthen the capacity of 15 media personnel to understand the nuances of basic education, education funding and education laws in Nigeria and how to use their existing platforms to advocate for a 12 years free, safe, quality education in Nigeria.
- Galvanize media reporting towards the amendment of the UBE Act and, the proposed amendment of the National Secondary Education Commission Act as well as any possible way of ensuring Nigeria law covers and provides for 12 years safe, free and quality basic education.
The project will also serve as a platform to celebrate, upskill and support media practitioners for qualitative and sustained reportage of basic education issues in Nigeria. Through its training, the fellowship envisions deepening participants’ knowledge, expanding media networks and coverage of all aspects of basic education, thereby increasing public awareness on basic education issues and ultimately securing state and non-state support towards addressing basic education challenges in Nigeria.
